The priority is to improve the quality of the events and to further encourage children to read
THE CHALLENGE IN 2008 IS 50 THOUSAND VISITING CHILDREN
The second meeting of the International Book Fair Organizing Committee was held on March 5 at the Nahím Isaías Museum.
Bearing in mind that the purpose of this event is to encourage reading, starting in early childhood, the Leonidas Ortega Foundation was introduced as a new member of the Committee and as the entity that will be responsible for coordinating fair activities that encourage children to read. The fair has various objectives this year: that the number of children that enter the EXPOLIBRO fair grounds surpasses the number from 2007, that these children come on a daily basis and that the fair’s diverse activities bring them closer to books and reading. The Ministry of Education and a contingent of public education teachers will help them to achieve this goal.
Dedicated to work so that minors develop physically and intellectually well, ECUAVISA, the television station, and the HOPE FOR CHILDREN institutional campaign that they are sponsoring alongside UNICEF have confirmed their full support the International Book Fair. They will show this support through promotion as well as formative and educational activities that encourage families to read together. The Ecuadorian Institute for Intellectual Property will also participate. This year, they have committed to strengthening the anti literary and artistic piracy campaign through workshops for parents and teachers. The intention is to sew the seeds so that that boys, girls, and adolescents learn to respect intellectual property.
During the meeting, in which Sonia Manzano from the Ministry of Culture was newly welcomed, the need to strengthen the inclusion of authors from all over the country was insistently discussed so that their literary work can be presented during EXPOLIBRO week. As part of this program, the Sub-secretary committed to unify and bring together national authors who are not well known from diverse parts of the country so they can improve their literary career.
Starting this month, anyone who is interested in having an event, release, conference or projection at EXPOLIBRO should apply for the Programming Annex through Lola Márquez. In this way, the program can be analyzed beforehand and we can assure the good quality of the events for the attending public.
The fair will take place from July 4 to 13 in the Crystal Palace at Malecón 2000 and will feature important national and foreign writers who will be announced at a later date. Entrance to the fair will be free of charge. The media and private businesses are also being called to participate in the Book Fair and reaffirm that this is the most important cultural event in the country.
