Expolibro 2008 promotes social inclusion of handicapped people.
An initiative taken by ECUAVISA.
After last year’s success, ECUAVISA renews its commitment as the official channel of the Guayaquil Book Fair, an event whose goal is to attract more than 300,000 people to the Crystal Palace facilities that are located in this city, from July 4 to 13. The novelty this year is that EXPOLIBRO 2008 will include people who are handicapped, therefore allowing them to access reading.
The organizers of the event have backed up this initiative, which was taken by ECUAVISA. They have taken action so that the fair grounds may be accessible to people who have physical, auditory, visual or intellectual handicaps. Platforms, guides, specialized literature, workshops for teachers and other actions have been designed in order to encourage people who have these handicaps to attend the fair this year.
Jaime Rull, the Executive President of Expolibro, highlighted the important role that the ECUAVISA channel has taken as a sponsor that has assumed great social responsibility by helping people with visual, auditory and cognitive handicaps be able to read. “It is an important step, and I believe that ours will be the first book fair in Latin America to consider a preferential space for children who do not usually have access to books because of their physical limitations. In no way is this due to a lack of interest for reading on their part, but rather a result of the complications that an excluding society constantly imposes on them.”
ECUAVISA will offer a program of activities in which translators will sign for people with auditory handicaps. A stand will distribute and exhibit texts that are printed in Braille, a language that allows people with visual handicaps to read.
The channel has proposed that the subject of educational inclusion be inserted in workshops for teachers that normally attract more than 500 professionals. ECUAVISA will also set up a multimedia room for 1000 children (75% of which have some sort of handicap) in order to promote education about nutrition for children and reading comprehension.
