EXPOLIBRO WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE BOGOTÁ BOOK FAIR

The organizing committee announces the first names that have been accepted to participate in the International Book Fair next July.

Through a press conference which was convoked today, the Organizing Committee of the International Book Fair in Ecuador, which will take place from July 4 to 13, 2008 at the Crystal Palace on Malecón 2000, as well as diverse institutions that endorse the organization of this event showed their satisfaction with all advances that have taken place in order to determine spaces and activities that will take place in this third edition:

MEETING IN COLOMBIA 
On April 23, one of the most important literary events in Latin America will commence in Bogotá.  EXPOLIBRO will be present, representing Ecuador’s largest national literary event. The intention is to develop a closer relationship with the Colombian market and hold exchanges that will permit an improved and varied offer of titles and authors to be present at the fair this year.  Likewise, the EXPOLIBRO office hopes to actively invite different institutions, literary businesses, publishing houses and authors that are starting up in the Colombian capital.

ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN

On this occasion, diverse entities, including the Central Bank, the Leonidas Ortega Foundation, the National Library System, the Ecuadorian Institute of Intellectual Property and the Ministry of Education are working together to prepare a program so that for at least one week during the fair, children may find diverse alternatives that will be both fun and encourage them to read with fun recreational options. 

INVITED AUTHORS

At present, four literary figures that have great experience and are internationally known have responded to the Activities Committee, which was formed at the last directors´ meeting, accepting the offer to attend EXPOLIBRO in the month of July.  Therefore, the organizers have already started working so as to ask each guest’s respective embassy in Ecuador and private businesses to participate by financing their participation in the Fair.

Marcelo Figueras
(1962 Buenos Aires)

Marcelo FiguerasArgentine novelist who has published 4 novels:

The Peronist Boy,

Time Spy (translated into French)
Kamchatka (translated into Russian, Polish and German, and into French and Dutch in 2006)
The Warm-up Battle (2006)

A few of his stories were published in anthologies like The Argentine Selection.  He wrote, alongside Marcelo Piñeyro, the script for Burnt Money (Goya Prize for the best Spanish-speaking movie and considered one of the ten best movies in 2000 by the Los Angeles Times.)   He also wrote the script for Kamchatka (chosen by Argentina to represent the country in the Oscars and one of the public’s favorite during the last Berlin Festival); Dangerous Obsession, one of the best 2004 box office successes in Argentina, and Rosario Tijeras, based on the novel by Jorge Franco (the most viewed Colombian film in history).  He has worked for the Clarin newspaper and for magazines like The Journalist and Humor, as well as the monthly magazine Cain, which he directed.  He has also written for the Spanish magazine Human Planet.  He is currently preparing his first film as director, a story called Superhero

Jorge Luís Volpi Escalante

jorge luis volpi escalanteBorn in Mexico City in 1968, Jorge Luis studied Law and Arts at the Autonomous National University of Mexico and Hispanic Philology at the University of Salamanca.  He wrote the following novels:  In Spite of the Dark Silence (1993), Peace of the Sepulchers (1995) and Melancholy Nature (1995).  His short novels include: Days of Anger (in the Three Sketches of Evil collection, 1994), Cure Your Bitter Skin (1997) and The Apocalypses Game (2000). He wrote essays on Imagination and Power. An Intellectual Story of 1968 (1998) and “The Day of the Dead,” (2001) from The Anthology of Young Mexican Storytellers.  His novel In Search of Klingsor (Seix Barral, 1999) obtained the Breve Library, Deux Océans and Grinzane Cavour Prizes, as well as the prize for best translation from the Cervantes Institute in Rome in 2002, which granted him an international reputation after the piece had been translated into nineteen languages.  The End of the Craziness (Seix Barral, 2003) is his latest novel.  Currently, he is a member of the National System of Mexican Creators and a grant holder of the J.S. Guggenheim Foundation.
 
Andrés Neuman Galán
(Buenos Aires, January 28, 1977), writer and Hispanic-Argentine column-writer that concentrates on poetry, novels and stories.

andres neuman galanSon of exiled musicians, born in Argentina despite being nationalized in Spain; he went to Granada in 1991, where he obtained his university degree in Hispanic Philology.  He has taught Hispano-American literature and has written columns and comic strips for Granada’s newspaper Ideal
Since the Alfaguara National Story Contest was initiated in 1995, a significant number of recognitions and literary prizes for poetry and narration have been granted.  Among the most important prizes are the XVII Hiperion Prize for poetry, for the book The Toboggan, or the Spring Prize for novels, for which he was a finalist in 2002 for his novel Life in Windows.

His work with short stories as coordinator of the Small resistances project, a tetralogy of stories written in Spanish, is also greatly admired.

Mario Bellatín
was born in Mexico in 1960, even though his parents were Peruvian.  At an early age, he went with his family to Peru, where Bellatín received formation as a writer and Theology and the Science of Communication. 

mario bellatin He also published his first novels in Peru:  Salty Women (1986), Greenhouse Effect (1992), Perpetual Cannon (1993), Beauty Parlor (1994) and Chinese Checkers (1995).  He also acted in a play called Blackout, which he wrote himself.  After this, he travelled to Mexico, where he currently directs the Dynamic School of Writers.  Today, he is considered to be one of the most interesting and original narrators of all Latin America.

was the finalist of the Médicis Prize for best foreign novel published in France in 2000.  Another of Bellatín´s novels, Flowers (Peisa, 2002), obtained the Xavier Villarrutia Prize, a distinction that authors like Rulfo, Fuentes and Octavio Paz received.

mario campanaMario Campaña
was born in Maridueña, Ecuador, in 1959, but he has resided in Barcelona since 1992.  He has also lived in Mexico, Glasgow and Paris. He has published four books of poetry:  Godric´s Notebooks (National Poetry Prize, 1988), Long Days (1996), Long Days and Other Poems (2002) and Forgetting Poetry Has Consequences (2002).

He is also the author of literary biographies like Francisco de Quevedo, the Spell on the World, (Omega, 2003); has translated A Tomb for Anatole by Stéphan Mallarmé, and he is responsible for 4 anthologies.  His most recent works are Airs in Ellicott Cityand Baudelaire.

He has worked for magazines and literary supplements in Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina, the United States, France and Spain.  He also directs the Latin American cultural magazine Guaraguao.

The International Book Fair in Ecuador has been consolidating itself, since it started in 2006, as the most relevant publishing and cultural event in Ecuador.  Each year, the fair brings together a good-size group of book-related professionals, including: publishers, distributors, booksellers, representatives of the graphic industry and writers, amongst others.  They present a commercial offer for national and international buyers that come especially from the Andean area, Central America, the Caribbean and the United States.
